My Parents Came to China

It was November 2017 and I had been in China for 3 months. My parents had been waiting for me to get settled in so they could bring my clothes and shoes from America.

The timing of their arrival was perfect because I had begun to get a bit homesick without even realizing it.

You can watch the vlog that I created back then below.

Yes, this is about my parents. It just so happens that the man I was dating at the time was also featured in this vlog.

Mother’s Day Tribute

With the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic, I spent the past 4 years overseas without physically spending time with my mother on mother’s day. Applications such as WeChat, Marco Polo and (now) FaceTime have helped us stay connected through a virtual celebration of this day.

Today, as I sat in my almost-finished-settling-in home, the first thing I had on my mind was to FaceTime my mom before she went to bed.

Being 12 hours ahead of east coast standard time is easy to calculate. If I could call her before 10:30p EST, I could get her on the phone before she went to bed.

Once my mom began to understand my goals and dreams in life, she became my biggest supporter and fan. She didn’t try to stop me from moving abroad. She didn’t impose her fears or concerns on me.

She prayed for my safety and made sure that we communicated every step of the way.

And that’s exactly what we have done and continue to do.

Now, when I share my goals, dreams and plans with my mom, she shares her excitement with me because she knows that she’s also going with me.

I take my mother with me wherever I go (my father, too).

Technology has allowed us to travel together, even when we’re worlds apart.

On today, I celebrate my mom – my heartbeat – for helping me become the woman I am today, and for never trying to stifle my dreams of traveling the globe.

I love you, mom.

Happy Mother’s Day.
