Review: Spider Taproom Kitchen | Dalian, China

Spider Taproom Kitchen - formerly known as Devolution - was one of the restaurants recommended to me in my quest to find the best Western Burger Joint in Dalian.

In case you're unfamiliar with the story, after returning to Dalian during the pandemic, I discovered that all three of my favorite Western burger joints were gone.

And I began a frantic search to find replacements...like, immediately.

In a WeChat group for Dalian expats, I asked for Western Burger Quality restaurants and received a list of places to explore.

Meet Spider Taproom•Kitchen

I decided to take the chance to visit SPIDER TAPROOM•KITCHEN with a colleague and a new friend that we met on a hiking trip to Laomao Mountain.

After we returned from the mountain, we went to dinner together, thus giving me an opportunity to try a burger at Spider Taproom•Kitchen.

Spider Taproom is an American-style restaurant with plenty of food and drinks options, perfect for anyone wanting to enjoy an evening out with friends and loved ones.

Atmosphere & Setting

The atmosphere at the Spider Taproom was cozy and inviting. The pub itself has a western theme, with brick and wood paneling on the walls and a variety of international signs hanging up. 

It had a warm, friendly vibe that made it stand out from other restaurants in Dalian. 

The staff were also very friendly and helpful when it came to answering questions about menu items or suggesting dishes, even though their English was limited (I mean, after all...it's China.)

The Food & Drink Options

The menu at Spider Taproom is diverse and offers something for everyone. They have classic burgers and sandwiches as well as some creative dishes like chicken chimichangas and fish tacos.

There are also vegetarian options available, such as roasted portobello mushrooms filled with feta cheese or vegan macaroni and cheese made with almond milk. 

For drinks, they serve draft beer from local breweries as well as wine and cocktails. 

I tried the beef burger with onion rings which was juicy and flavorful – definitely worth trying if you go!

Prices & Value for Money

The prices at Spider Taproom are quite reasonable considering how much food you get – most main courses cost around 40RMB (about $6 USD). 

All in all, I thought the prices were fair given how much food we got – definitely good value for money.

Overall Verdict

Is the Spider Taproom•Kitchen "Burger-certifiable???"

I would say, "yes." I must admit, though, my favorite item ordered was the quesadilla. 

And the onion rings. 🤤

Overall, my experience at Spider Taproom was enjoyable. From its cozy atmosphere to its delicious food options, there’s something here for everyone – whether you’re looking for a casual night out or just want some tasty grub without breaking your budget.
